Next up in our board series is Matilda Ilander, who is one of the two heads of the Lecture Committee.

Matilda bloggen

What made you want to be Head of Lecture?

Matilda: Quite simple – Because I love this kind of stuff. To organize things, to listen to all of these interesting people who hold lectures, to know what’s going on and arranging it all. I may have a need for control.

Who is your dream booking to give a lecture at UF?

My dream booking was Hans Rosling. We talked about him just days before his passing. He had such a gift for teaching in an interesting and uplifting way. I’m not sure I have one at the moment, but it was amazing having the Minister for Foreign Affairs at UF a couple of weeks ago.

In your opinion, what is the most important political happening this year?

There is so much to choose from, it is quite many important elections and happenings all over the world during the year. But I would say that the British triggering of article 50, which could happen any day now, and the German federal election in September are the most interesting and important happenings, at least for Europe and the EU.

If you could have dinner with President Donald Trump, what would the two of you talk about?

I would probably like to talk to him about why he feels entitled to interfere in matters of people and their own bodies, not just in the USA but around the globe, or why it bothers him so much that he has a need to regulate women’s bodies. But I guess he wouldn’t be keen on saying something on the subject or discuss anything more with me. I probably wouldn’t want to either though.

What is your secret guilty pleasure?

I don’t see any pleasure as a guilty pleasure, you really shouldn’t be ashamed of the things you like to do to relax. But I suppose that my love for the TLC show Say Yes to the Dress, Kalles Kaviar, and Alcazar isn’t really cool.

Meet Gustav Nyqvist, Head of Radio Utblick, who has a busy schedule for International Women’s Day!

How come you wanted to be head of Radio utblick?

Gustav: I have just ended a very short career at Sveriges Radio P3 where I for 4 months produced a music show. But the show was canceled and I felt I was not done with radio. And as an aspiring talk radio producer I saw UF was looking for a radio producer for the podcast Utblick. I’ve been a member of UF for many years. I am also supposed to be writing my bachelor in International Relations and I felt I had to pump up the motivation somewhat since its been a couple of years since I last studied. Does not look good though. But basically UF is a great place to be if you are into politics and such.

What international issue would you like people to pay more attention to?

Europe! Especially European citizens need to pay more attention because they might find themselves in a very different Europe in a not so distant future. 15 years ago I was very optimistic and despite immense events like 9-11, I still thought that Europe would come out as the strongest voice for human rights by example and voice. We are seeing the exact opposite. My back then, worst case scenario, I thought only a cynic could expect. It has since been totally Trumped.

If you could go back in time and change one thing in history, what would it be?

Probably accepting Hitlers application to art school would have spared countless lives and allowed Europe to heal after the tragedy of World War 1. Problems are more than often beyond the scope of one event or one person. But yeah, probably removing Hitler from the equation would be a good idea.

What are your plans for International Women’s Day?

Well, I’m interviewing Margot Wallström about the European elections. Then I’m attending her lecture at UF on what is the scope of security. Later in the afternoon I’m marching for equality and women’s safe from harm. And for this evening I’m going to my friends feminist nightclub Klubb 8 to have a few beers.

Tell us about a woman you admire

My grandmother on my fathers side was a very special person. Born on a small farm in Härjedalen, in the northern parts of Sweden, she besides my father, had also a daughter with impaired hearing, deaf more or less. In the 1950’s Sweden, children like that were taken away from their families and were institutionalized because the authorities didn’t qualify families to care for children that were not “able bodied” like everyone else. She fought and at the same time took care of many children in harm’s way, left on their own, like a foster parent in the family home. To me she was an immensely strong minded woman and a real social activist of her time. And she really taught me to speak up against injustice.

Next up in our board interview series is Dijana Mujdzic, Vice President of the Society of International Affairs.

How come you wanted to be Vice President of the association?

Dijana: After spending nearly two years within the organization, both as an active member and as Head of the Lecture Committee, I have grown fond of UF and was not ready to let go. Applying for the position as VP would give me the possibility to share my knowledge with the new board members and at the same time develop the organization as a whole. It’s a win-win situation!

What do you think is the most important political event this year?

Well, I do not know if I would say that it is the most important one, but it is surely the most provoking one. I’m thinking of the presidential election in the US where Mr. Donald Trump was elected. Although this happened last year I would still count it as one of the most provoking political events so far.

Tell us about an international issue that provokes you.

The still ongoing Israeli-Palestine conflict. A sad and burdening situation that is a proof of how different political and economic interests can and are deciding over peoples lives and homes. This conflict will haunt the international political scene as long as we live. The two-state solution is, with Trump in power, unfortunately not coming any time soon.

Describe your alter ego.

Only one? I think I have at least two. But it’s up to others to decide how they interpret me. For me it will always be Dijana, simple as that.

Today is February 28, Fettisdagen. If you could eat only one dessert everyday for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Basically, everything that contains chocolate will do just fine.

Board, Committees, Fun, The Organization - Tuesday, February 14th, 2017

The new board for 2017 is elected and we want to introduce ourselves! First up in our interview series is Mikael Hemlin, President of the Society of International Affairs.

What made you want to be the president of the association?

Mikael: Well, I was in charge of Utblick magazine last year, and applying for president felt like a natural next step. Also, I believe that organizations like the UF is more needed now than ever; one of the largest problems in contemporary politics is that people in general don’t know enough about the policies, institutions etc., that govern the world. To be part of, and even lead the work of an organization that has the purpose of making people more aware of, and more interested in international politics, is an amazing opportunity. Moreover, being involved in the UF has allowed me to improve many different skills. Therefore, further involvement only felt reasonable.

What are you looking forward to this year?

To be honest, 2017 has the potential of turning into a horrifying year in politics. France, Germany and the Netherlands are holding general elections, and the worst-case scenario would most likely lead to the demise of the European Union. Hopefully it won’t come to that, however, after Trump’s victory in the US, one should be careful about ruling out populist candidates based on opinion polls. I suppose that I’m looking forward to it anyway, though, since it’s going to be such an important year. And of course it’ll be interesting to see how Trump fares in the White House, and how the Swedish political landscape changes after the recent ”controversies” of Moderaterna. Finally, I’m looking forward to developing the UF along with the rest of the 2017 board.

If you could change one thing in world politics, what would it be?

That’s a tough one. It depends on the scope of the change, and how realistic it must be. On the largest of scales, I would like to see deepened European Integration. It might have something to do with the fact the the EU is at the core of my bachelor’s programme, but I believe that further integration in areas like migration policy and foreign, security and defence policy would be of benefit to the entire world in the long run. Negotiating such a change would of course be complicated to say the least.

Tell us something only a few people know about you

I’ve been drumming since I was 10 years old, and have recently been playing a lot of progressive metal with complicated polyrhythms and stuff like that. More than a few know about that, but I suppose that the more part of those who know are older friends and family.

How are you spending Valentine’s Day?

Well, I’m in Spain, and my girlfriend is at home in Gothenburg. Valentine’s Day has never been that big of a deal to neither me nor her, so it’s not a disaster. So yeah, I’m spending my Valentine’s Day eating, reading, bathing in the Atlantic and talking to her through phone and over Messenger.

Sökes, The Organization - Monday, August 29th, 2016

The Society of International Affairs in Gothenburg is looking for several board members for the fall semester. Have a look at the descriptions below and join our fantastic team!

Here is who we are looking for:
– 2 heads of the PR committee
As the head of the PR committee you have a few areas of responsibility: first and foremost you are responsible for the promotion of the Society, be it through the website, social media, newsletter, posters or any other means that are available. Moreover, you organize class visits and inform about how to become active in UF during various events, as well as lead the “High school project” which involved spreading the knowledge about the world to the high school students.
– 2 heads of the Event committee
As the head of the Event committee you are responsible for two main things: the film club and study trips. The film club organizes regular screenings of documentaries on the topics related to international. The study trip abroad is arranged every semester and you are the leader of this trip. The trips are funded through a combination of grants and participant fees so keep in mind that going on trips requires you to spend some of your private money. You can also organize various other events for the members, including social events and parties.
– 1 head of Radio Utblick
Radio Utblick is yet another means of spreading knowledge about the world, this time through the means of a radio program. As head of Radio Utblick you will be responsible for making sure the radio show is regularly broadcasted. For every program you and your team will decide on a theme, make interviews, record, edit and then broadcast. Once the show is broadcasted it is your responsibility to advertise it and make it available online.

All the board members are free (and encouraged) to recruit other members to their respective committees to help them with those tasks.

If you are interested in any (or several) of the above positions send your CV and a short motivation letter to election@ufgbg.se before September 12, 2016.

We are looking forward to your applications!

Sökes, The Organization - Friday, May 13th, 2016

Are you interested in international affairs and willing to try yourself in a civil society organization? Then, a post of the secretary for the Society for International Affairs (UF) is the choice for you!
As a secretary, you are responsible for documenting the work of the Society. You take protocol of all the board meetings and also update membership data. When protocoling, you take key notes and make a summary of what have been decided and discussed at the meetings. It is preferable that you attend lectures end events to recruit and register new members and also help members that have lost or have not brought their membership cards.

You should be familiar with using excel-documents, be comfortable with the English language and have your own computer. It is a very perceptive work and a perfect way to get to know how an organisation actually works, economically, legally and organizationally.

But most important is that the work will be what you make of it. Like our leaving secretary, you can choose to host an event, work with developing UF budget etc. You will learn a lot while having a great time. It is a perfect way to maximize your student time, if you are interested in foreign relations politics!

This position is with the mandate starting in end of August 2016 and until the next annual meeting in January 2017.

Interested? Send your motivation letter and CV to election@ufgbg.se until 29 May 23:59! If you have questions about the position you may ask them to our current secretary, Nicolina Nilsson at secretary@ufgbg.se
