MUN simulation: the War on Drugs
Saturday, October 22nd, 2016. 11:00 - 17:00
After the failed referendum in early October, peace is once again at risk in Colombia. For the FARC guerillas, one of the main sources of income is the trade with illegal drugs. The military fight against this business is supported by the United States with over $500 million every year, only in Colombia. Other countries follow even more radical approaches. Rodrigo Duterte, the new president of the Philippines, openly promotes the killing of both the producers as well as those addicted to drugs.
In the last years, however, there has been a growing opposition against this ‘War on Drugs’, pointing to the awful consequences it entails.
Delegates are therefore encouraged to discuss the different aspects of this broad topic, including but not limited to security, human rights, social and gender issues. The topic will be debated within SOCHUM, the UN General Assembly’s Committee for Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Affairs.
