The Scramble for Congo: Patterns of Exploitation in DRC

On March 26th The Society of International Affairs in Gothenburg would like to invite you to the lecture – “The Scramble for Congo: Patterns of Exploitation in DRC” with- Ola Olsson. 

 

Ola is a professor of economics at School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg. His research deals with issues such as the political economy of natural resource exploitation and long-run economic growth. He currently serves as a co-editor of Economic Inquiry and is a member of the SIDA Research Council.

 

He has returned from Kinshasa around a month ago, where he is currently conducting field work for his research.
Throughout its history, DR Congo has been plagued by external and internal resource exploitation. Which has held back the country’s development potential and caused massive human suffering.

 

The lecture will provide an overview of Congolese history and relate it to the political economy of current developments such as the ongoing violence in the eastern parts, conflict minerals policies and the struggle for power in Kinshasa.

 

Free for members, 20 SEK for everyone else. A one year membership can be purchased for 50 SEK before the lecture.
