Video Lecture: Irish elections with Philip O’Connor
Friday, April 17th, 2020. 18:00 - Friday, April 24th, 2020. 18:00
Philip O’Connor is an Irish freelance journalist. Based in Stockholm, O’Connor is producing material for Irish, Swedish and British media. With his 2011 debut book, “A Parish From Home”, where he tells the story about Gaelic football in Stockholm and how it played a significant role for the Irish diaspora in Sweden, Philip O’Connor was one of the nominees at the Irish Book Awards.
In this online lecture, the main topic is the Irish general elections that took place in February 2020. As in many other European countries, the Irish political landscape has been reshaped. Sinn Féin, a party that historically were deeply associated with the IRA movement, had a major success in the elections with 24.5 % of the Irish votes, making them the party with the highest percent in the Irish parliament as of today.
Philip O’Connor also gives a background to the political history of the nation, the tensions between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and how growing up in Ireland has affected him.
NOTE: The online lecture will be available until 24th April 2020.
