We were children
Thursday, February 25th, 2016. 18:30
The Event Committee of the Society of International Affairs in Gothenburg in co-operation with Cinema Politica welcomes you to the screening of WE WERE CHILDREN. This documentary film combines interviews with two survivors of the Canadian Indian residential school system with dramatic recreations of their experiences.
For over 130 years, more than 100,000 of Canada’s First Nations children were legally required to attend government-funded schools run by various Christian faiths, separating them from their parents and their traditional land. The express purpose of these schools was to ”kill the Indian inside the child”. These children endured the brutality of physical hardship, mental degradation, and the complete erasure of their culture. The last residential school was closed in 1996.
The screening is free and open to everyone. Welcome to the first screening of the semester!
After the screening you can join us for a discussion about the movie in a nearby pub.
