US Election Theme Month: Lecture with Jacob Gunderson

October 15. 18:00 - 19:30

With the consequential US election approaching on Nov. 5th, this talk will take a step back from the day-to-day politics of election campaigns to walk through the United States’ electoral system with a focus on how candidates are selected, voters cast their ballots, and how those votes are translated into winners and losers. In emphasizing both the between-state differences in electoral systems and the way the US electoral system (dis)empowers voters differentially, the talk will connect these institutional features to some of the challenges in contemporary American democracy.
