Popular Attitudes in Iraq and Sweden Towards Those Accused of Affiliation with ISIS
At its height, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) governed a population of approximately 10 million people, including tens of thousands of foreign nationals. Seven years after the territorial defeat of ISIS, about 1 million internally displaced persons (IDP) remain trapped in a constellation of camps across the region. These IDPs are stigmatized as ISIS supporters regardless of the level of cooperation with the group they engaged in and whether this cooperation was voluntary or coerced. Now that the conflict has ended, individuals who engaged in crimes against humanity need to be brought to justice, but others who may have simply fled ISIS to the safety of camps and never actively supported the group, need reintegration and reconciliation in their home communities. Those with foreign citizenship should, under international law, return home. This talk will present data on attitudes of Iraqi citizens and Swedes towards accused ISIS-affiliated displaced persons and discuss the politics surrounding their return to their home communities.
Fika will be provided!
