Margot Wallström Lecture – “From Despair to Hope”

Wednesday, March 8th, 2017. 12:00 - 13:00

“From Despair to Hope – A Swedish Security Policy for Our Times”

Margot Wallström, Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs, will give a lecture to the members of the Society of International Affairs on the International Women’s Day, 8th of March.
Swedish security policy rests on a foundation consisting of three important things: military non-alignment, co-operation and a reliable defence capacity. But security today is much broader and more complex than just a matter of defence. Knowledge and understanding of threats and how they can be prevented affect Sweden, our surroundings and the global society. Therefore the climate, the migration and gender equality are central issues in a modern security policy. Without gender equality stable societies cannot be guaranteed, and without stable societies, the resilience against the impact of climate change will be affected. Strengthening women’s rights is therefore an equally important part of Swedish security policy as the defence of our borders.
